Lorin von Longo-Liebenstein
I started my journey with fungi as a child, sitting on my parents' shoulders and pointing out mushrooms in the forest. Years later, I took an internship at a mushroom growing supply store, eventually working my way up to become Head of Laboratory and Production. After four years of deep, applied experience, I decided to forge my own path, leaving the company and the country to launch my own business where I produced Chaga inoculum and other native species. Three years after that, I joined forces with friends to found Kääpä Biotech, a fungal biotech company. During my four years as Mycological Director, we grew from a tiny startup with a lab in a former bank vault into a global industry leader. Driven by a desire for new challenges and a focus on untapped niches in the fungal world, I stepped away once more. Today, leveraging my experience working with a vast amount of fungal species and applications from mycoremediation to functional mushrooms, I work as a freelancer with various partners.
In recognition of these long-term efforts, I was honored with the Community Mycologist Award from the Mycological Society of America in 2025 for outstanding contributions to Mycology.
Connecting all those years is a passion for fungi and the joy of sharing my knowledge. Through leading over 70 workshops and lectures over the years for various target groups, I honed my skill in fungal communication. Every event is tailored towards the target audience and available on various topics.
In my collaborations with various research institutes I bring the experience of applied mycology into the mix and help researchers to design and execute projects that take viability in the applied sector into consideration, preventing the research from disappearing in a drawer. Out in the field, I combine the efficiency and results-driven mindset of the private sector with the rigorous detail that scientific work demands.
Startups require creativity and adaptable strategies to solve complex challenges with limited resources. As a founder and advisor to various companies, I thrive on finding tailored solutions for fungi-focused businesses. From troubleshooting production processes to refining product design. Fungi play a crucial yet deeply underappreciated role in healthy gardens. My approach focuses on integrating fungi into landscape design to boost biodiversity, aesthetic appeal, and ecosystem resilience—all while providing a bountiful harvest for you. Having designed and built various fungal gardens, I am currently advising the Royal Horticultural Society on their initiative to raise the profile of fungi in gardening. Besides turning our own garden into a fungi hotspot, I am also working on a book on the topic, so stay tuned!
